Countdown! The EU will make the ISO 15118-20 standard mandatory in 2027 – is your charging point ready?

Under the EU ’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), starting January 1, 2027, all newly installed or upgraded public and private charging stations in the EU must mandatorily support ISO 15118-20. Charging products that fail to comply will be locked out of the European market.

Overview

ISO 15118-20 formally titled Road vehicles — Vehicle to grid communication interface — Part 20: Second generation network and application layer requirements, is the “second generation” core standard for communication between electric vehicles and charging equipment, enabling smart V2G, PNC, and WPT.

Key Features

Plug & Charge (PNC): Automates authentication and billing. Users simply connect the EV to the charger, and the system handles identity verification, charging initiation, and payment silently in the background, improving convenience and interoperability across operators.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): Supports bidirectional energy flow, allowing EVs to act as distributed energy storage units, providing grid services such as peak shaving, frequency regulation, and demand response.

Wireless Power Transfer (WPT): ISO 15118-20 extends support for wireless charging, including communication requirements for automatic connection devices.

Traditional AC charging points based on PWM communication will be phased out gradually and must be retrofitted with SECC (AC PLC) converters to support power line communication in accordance with the ISO 15118-2/20 standard; DC charging points that comply with ISO 15118-20 must be equipped with PNC (Plug-and-Charge) functionality as a mandatory requirement, otherwise the technical benefits of the new standard cannot be fully realised.
